“A more ambitious Australia has to be less timid and fearful – we need to focus and celebrate our successes, our innovators and our community leaders – events, actions and products that are making real and positive change in the world. Pride over vanity, courage over power, shared values over conflict and we over me. Australia is full of truly amazing people that push through obstacles and challenge unhealthy and unsustainable paradigms – let’s get behind their ambition and let it feed our own capacity.
A long time ago I heard of the concepts ‘leading from behind’ and ‘leading from the front’. I was the former but I determined that the best way to encourage others was to be clear in my values, my approach and my leadership to attract the right people to participate in my ambition – to make our cities better for all people. So now I lead from the front. It’s not always easy out here, but I know that my courage has inspired others to step out and take their own leadership role. And that makes me proud – of them but also of myself, and those feelings in turn re-inspire me to keep pushing through the hard times to achieve my goals. It’s a virtuous cycle that is also generative as each new leader catalyses others.”
